DC Glassworks and Sculpture Studios

This location is shown only to members

We have arranged to visit the DC GlassWorks for this meetup. This meetup is restricted to 5 shooters, including the organizer due to safety issues. We will try to schedule repeat meetups since the number of shooters are restricted. All shooters will be limited to one visit so everyone can get a chance to go. A waiting list is available to fill in empty slots in case of cancellations. We will encourage carpooling to be sure we all get to the meetup location at the same time.

ALL shooters must wear long pants, closed toe shoes and socks to protect you from hot falling glass!! In addition, you must sign a safety release since there is lots of broken, hot glass and the potential for leg and foot injuries.. NO EXCEPTIONS!!

It might be cool outside, but be assured, it will be warm in the studio. The work area is flooded with natural light with work spotlights to assist the glass blowers. There is a warm glow from the glory hole of the furnace. Flash may be used, but be sure to try existing light shots for the maximum impact. The number, skill level of the artists and type of work will vary from session to session since this is a public studio.

Mission: At DC GlassWorks, we want to inspire imagination and creativity through the practice of glassblowing. Our vision is to build a world-class glassblowing facility that will help provide opportunities for creative exploration for all persons from our diverse community. DC GlassWorks is committed to providing area artists and the public a place to enjoy, discover, and realize their dreams.

Attractions included: hot glass area with live glass blowing, cold glass area, gallery space, metal fabrication, wax and plaster fabrication area.

Great opportunity for photography. External flash recommended. Hot glass has to be kept in motion all the time to keep it from sagging. Keep your shutter speed up! Use a low end, fast zoom to photograph the glass.

This was a lot of fun, the lighting will test you for WB and the bright lights of the artist work will test your metering. Bring a flash or be ready to shoot at ISO 6400.
