The Great Falls of the Potomac River is the second largest in the state of Maryland. It is a series of cascading falls. Water drops 76 feet in two-thirds of a mile. Natural hazards in the Potomac such as water falls and rapids created the need for canals for reliable water transportation.
The Historic Great Falls Tavern has stood at Lock 20 on the C&O Canal since 1831. Today the building serves as the visitor center at the Great Falls section of the park. Mule drawn canal boat rides resumed in April 2009.
The Great Falls on the Virginia side is beautiful so I imagine the Maryland side won't disappoint. There are also canal boat rides!
“ Interesting seeing the MD side of Great Falls after going to the VA side frequently. the best part was seeing kayakers flip, get back in their inflatable kayak and flip again! ”
